Hormones, Glands, Organs, Vitamins
and Minerals Evaluation
A high state of health can exist only when all the body’s endocrine hormones are in a proper ratio – today’s modern lifestyle places virtually all of our society into endocrine imbalance
Hormones are our body’s chemical messengers. Information is sent between the brain, the glands and the cells. They rejuvenate, regenerate and restore health to our bodies.
Functions of the glands that produce hormones:
Hypothalamus
- Governs our emotions
- Sexual desires
- Blood pressure
- Thirst and hunger
- Body’s thermostat
- Controls pituitary glands
Excess – racing thoughts, excess sweating
Under – coldness, sluggish thoughts, depression
Pituitary Gland
Posterior
- Stimulates uterine and breast contraction for the production of milk
- Stimulates re-absorption of water into the blood by the kidneys decreasing urine production
Anterior
- Human Growth - growth of skeleton and muscles
- THS – controls release of thyroid hormone
- ACTH – stimulates the adrenal cortex to release cortisol
- LH – luteinizing hormone ensures ovulation, prepares uterus for pregnancy – controls production of oestrogen, and testosterone.
- FSH – follicle stimulation hormone – stimulates egg and sperm production
- MSH – regulates the production of melanin – pigmentation of the skin
Thyroid Gland
- Regulates the rate at which the body functions (metabolic rate)
- Produces thyroxine – helps control body size – regulates growth of tissue
- Produces calcitonin – maintains the balance of calcium
Parathyroid Glands
- Increases the blood concentrations of calcium and phosphorous
- Transfers calcium from the bones to the blood (osteoporosis)
- Cramps
Pineal Gland
- Body’s internal biological clock
- Tells when to sleep
- When to develop sexually
- Produces serotonin – calmness and inner peace – deficiency, insomnia, anxiety, depression, aggression
Adrenal Glands
Cortex – Anterior pituitary controls the cortex by secreting the hormone ACTH known as a steriod
- Three layers associated with three hormones
- Mineralocorticoids helps maintain both the electrolyte and water content of the body.
- Glucocorticoids regulate the metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates
- Gondal hormones secretes two types of hormones: Androgen (male) Oestrogen (female)
Medulla – hormones secreted ( Adrenalin, Noradrenalin) effect the structures in the body under the control of the sympathetic nervous system
- Stress, fright, attack
- Increased heart beat, higher blood pressure, high blood glucose levels
Cortisol – stress – high levels delete certain neurotransmitters in the brain
- trigger carbohydrate cravings and eating binges
- disturb sleep patterns (can’t switch off)
- decrease insulin sensitivity, increases blood sugar
- fat gets stored in abdominal area, weight gain
- raises histamine levels (allergies), pain, inflammation
- changes thyroid function which lowers the metabolic rate
- lowers DHEA responsible for production of sex hormones – libido declines
- progesterone levels decline (can’t get pregnant)
The Gonads
- Controlled by the pituitary gland
- Male testes produce sperm cells and secrete testosterone
- Female ovaries – contain immature eggs, secretes oestrogen and progesterone
Excess Oestrogen
- Puffiness and bloating, weight gain in thighs and buttocks
- Breast tenderness
- Heavy bleeding
- Mood swings (anxiety depression, weepiness)
- Sleep problems, migraines
In men–
- Hair loss
- Headaches,
- Weight gain – men boobs
- Prostate enlargement
- Irritability
Deficient Oestrogen
- Irregular menses
- Vaginal dryness
- Painful intercourse
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Dry skin
- Lethargy and depression
- Premature aging
- Heavy, large breasts
Deficient Progesterone
- Painful or lumpy breasts
- Headaches at a certain time of the cycle
- Anxiety, irritability
- Weight gain
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Bleeding between periods
- Reduced libido
Excess Male Hormones
- Acne
- Ovarian cysts
- Excess body hair
- Unstable blood sugar levels
- Thinning hair on the head
- Mid-cycle pain
- Erratic menses
Thymus Gland
